The thursday social club
Helping dogs develop the perfect balance of neutrality, social skills, and self control.
The Thursday Social Club is a weekly walking group for dogs and their owners, designed to provide structured social experiences in real world environments.
Many people think socialisation means dogs playing with every dog they meet. In reality, true socialisation is about helping dogs feel comfortable, confident, and able to make good decisions around other dogs, people, and everyday distractions.
A well-socialised dog should be able to remain calm and neutral when needed, while also having the skills to interact appropriately when the situation is right.
That is exactly what The Thursday Social Club aims to achieve.
What To Expect
Our walks take place every Thursday from 6pm–7pm across Sudbury and surrounding villages, with locations changing regulary to provide dogs with a variety of environments and experiences.
Throughout the walk, we focus on developing:
Calm, neutral behaviour around other dogs
Appropriate social interactions
Confidence in different environments
Impulse control and self regulation
Engagement with their handler
Good decision making around distractions
Reliable recall and responsiveness
Where suitable and safe, dogs may have opportunities for off lead freedom. This will always depend on the individual dog's recall, behaviour, and the environment we are walking in.
More Than Just a Dog Walk
The Thursday Social Club is also designed to help owners better understand their dogs.
During the walks, you'll learn how to:
Read canine body language
Recognise signs of stress, discomfort, and confidence
Understand healthy and appropriate play
Identify when dogs need space
Recognise when intervention is needed
Build your dog's confidence without creating overdependence on social interaction
The goal is to help owners become more confident in understanding what their dog is communicating and making informed decisions on their behalf.
Building Real World Skills
Throughout our walks, dogs will have opportunities to practise:
Choosing calm behaviour around other dogs
Waiting patiently rather than rushing into interactions
Disengaging from distractions when asked
Settling during breaks
Recalling away from exciting environments
Making thoughtful choices rather than reacting impulsively
These are the skills that help dogs succeed in everyday life.
