ABOUT ME
Welcome to Point Forward, where training is all about understanding, connection, and fun.I’m Leila, a positive reinforcement, holistic dog behaviourist and trainer based in Sudbury, Suffolk. I specialise in helping families and their dogs build strong, lifelong bonds through kind, effective, and enjoyable training. My work focuses on behaviour modification, helping dogs struggling with reactivity, fear, or aggression learn safer, more comfortable ways to cope with the world. I also support puppies, building strong emotional foundations that can reduce the risk of problems developing later on.Understanding dogs isn’t always easy, especially when emotions run high on both ends of the lead. My approach focuses on teaching owners how to truly understand their dogs, read their body language, and build a trusting relationship that supports real, lasting change. In 2023, is when I adopted Baloo, a 10 week old German Shorthaired Pointer. What I didn’t realise at the time was that he was already showing signs of lead reactivity, and separation anxiety. As a working breed, he also struggled with impulse control around movement, if it moved, he wanted to chase it!We tried various routes, including gundog training and seeking professional help, but much of the advice I received didn’t sit right with me. I was told Baloo was “naughty,” that I was too soft, and that corrections, force, or punishment were the answer. I couldn’t agree. I don’t believe in training through fear or intimidation, I believe dogs deserve guidance, support, and understanding. That experience changed everything.I immersed myself in learning, attending workshops, webinars, reading extensively, and gaining multiple accreditations. I left my 9-5 job to dedicate my time to Baloo and began working as a dog walker, focusing specifically on reactive dogs who were often turned away from group walks. Dogs labelled “difficult,” “naughty,” or “too much” became my passion, because in reality, they were simply struggling.Seeing the progress these dogs made confirmed what I already knew, this was my path. I enrolled to qualify as a dog behaviourist so I could help more dogs, and the people who love them feel supported, understood, and hopeful.Today, my relationship with Baloo is stronger than ever. Training is fun, not stressful. Progress isn’t linear, and some days are harder than others especially when unexpected triggers pop up , but we move forward together.Alongside my behaviour work, I continue to dog walk and volunteer with dog rescues, helping rehabilitate dogs and improve their chances of finding loving homes. If you’re struggling with your dog, you’re not alone. I understand how isolating it can feel. The dog world has changed, and it can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it by yourself. This is a partnership. We’re in this together.
